They actually surrendered several times- After the Ottomans made the decision, they headed west and the first British they met were cooks that went for groceries and got lost (this part may have not happened, but that’s the story). Then they met two sergeants that refused to accept the surrender but took pictures. Afterwards they met a British general that accepted the surrender properly, but when a superior General heard of it he annulled the surrender and held a ceremony with him. And after that they had another surrender ceremony or two with General Allenby.
