The tsunami was generated by a colossal landslide in the inlet at the upper left of the picture, and attained a maximum height of 1720ft, as clearly evinced by the scouring of the formerly tree-covered slopes flanking the bay – the greatest height of tsunami for which there is immediate evidence (excluding possible prehistoric ones) – at the mouth of that inlet: as it passed into the wider part of the fjord it was dispersed & lessened in height, but the extent of the scouring is clearly visible.
