British soldier tends to the grave of two unknown Austro-Hungarian soldiers killed in action in June 1918 during the failed Austro-Hungarian Piave Offensive, WW1, 1918 [1000 x 716]
Killed during failed Austrian Piave offensive on Italian front, it was last Austrian offensive of the war with a goal to knock out Italy.
Austrians attacked with a almost 1 million men while opposing them were similar number of Italians plus 40 000 British and 25 000 French soldiers plus several British air squadrons.
They managed to cross Piave river and establish bridgeheads on several places with almost 100 000 soldiers crossing in first 2 days, but shortage of artillery ammo, terrible casualties, Italian counter-attacks and Piave rose up washing away pontoons made their bridgeheads untenable.
On June 20 Emperor Karl personally ordered withdrawal.
