Not just the Dust Bowl.
My father, aunt and my father’s parents were on the move from central Indiana all the way to Calexico, CA from 1930 to 1940 (I have the Census records to prove it). No work in the Indiana limestone quarries due to the Depression, so they headed out west. My grandfather did construction and contracting the whole time.

NOTE: The exception was the “Empire Quarry”, which supplied the limestone for the Empire State Building. It’s still an active quarry, as repairs on the building go on all the time and they need replacement limestone that matches the original.
