Pictured: Evdokia Petrova being forced to board a plane back to the USSR for an unknown fate as part of the Petrov Affair.
A crowd of people tried to stop her from being taken after claiming to hear her cry out in Russian "I don’t want to go. Help me." The crowd successfully moved the stairway away from the plane but were eventually forced back with the threat of fire hoses.
During the flight, the crew attempted to ask Ms. Petrova if she was being held against her will, but she was unable to respond. The Australian government then decided to intervene.
When the plane stopped to refuel in Darwin, ASIO boarded the plane and removed the MVD agents, detaining them on the grounds they were illegally carrying firearms on the plane.
Once alone Ms. Petrova was offered Australian political asylum, which she accepted.
Diplomatic ties between Australia and USSR were cut for the next ~5 years over the spy affair and the Australian decision to forcibly prevent the extraction of Ms. Petrova and her defecting husband Vladimir Petrov.

Her husband got a political asylum too? Hope so.

What are MVD agents? Are they similar to the KGB?

Guy on the left has a look of "Oh crap… Now every foreign intelligence agency on the planet knows exactly what I look like, there goes the cool spy job…"
Guy on the right? Yeah screw that, I wouldn’t mess with that guy at all, looks like a brute.
