Flora Sandes was the only British Woman officially to serve in the British Army during WWI. She began as a nurse in Serbia (who at that time, and later in WWII, was a staunch ally of ours) and ‘morphed’ into a full-on combatant. She was adored in Serbia, sometimes even being compared to Joan of Arc, being in the perception of the Serbs an epitome of everything valourous & noble in the British Spirit.
In this picture she is walking very carefully – and in my opinion visibly trying hard & courageously to manage pain – through Salonika in Greece, during her convalescence from wounds received from a Bulgarian hand-grenade
And here is a link to a rather good article about her.
