Putin Sends Powerful Letter To President Trump
A gunman opened fire at a small church in Sutherland Springs, Texas where he killed 26 people and injured more than 20, including children. The gunman was wearing black clothes and a bullet vest when he went into the church service of First Baptist Church and started shooting everyone.
Many world leaders sent their condolences to President Trump, including Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Saudi leader King Salman bin Abdulaziz and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The official Twitter feed of the Russian Embassy posted a tweet stating that President Putin sent a letter offering his condolences to President Trump regarding the Texas massacre. The statement reads “Please, accept my condolences over the tragedy that has occurred in Texas. It is difficult to imagine a crueler and more cynical crime than the killing of people during a church service,”.
The gunman was later identified as 26-year-old Devin Kelley. After the shooting, he tried to take a hostage and run away, but one local man shot Kelley with a rifle. Although Kelley drove off, he was later found dead. It’s unknown whether the local man killed him or he killed himself.
Kelley’s motive for the shooting is still unknown. He was kicked out of the Air Force for bad conduct. He was also court-martialed in 2012 and spent a year in military prison after he assaulted his wife and child.
Although Kelley owned a gun, he was not legally allowed to carry it. The state of Texas denied him, so the idea that could have been stopped by gun control is off the table.
“By all the facts that we seem to know, he was not supposed to have access to a gun. So how did this happen?” Texas Governor Greg Abbott asked.
