S/Sgt. Joseph Arnaldo of New Bedford, MA, who had just come off the line after 10 days of fighting in the Battle of the Bulge. His hood and face covered with snow, Arnaldo had recovered from a temporary blindness when an tank round was fired a few yards from him. 1945 [1200×1527]
Interesting side note: S/Sgt. Arnaldo is from New Bedford, MA but Bedford, VA is the home of the National D-Day memorial. This small town in Virginia was chosen because the town of only 3,200 sent some 30 of their youth to war, 19 of which died on June 6, 1944. Another two died in the hedge droves of Normandy and two more died throughout the war. Bedford, VA was chosen as it had, proportionally, the most sever D-Day losses of any community in the USA.

I met a man who survived that battle. His position was overrun by Germans and he survived by playing dead, hiding in a pile of leaves on the road side as German troops marched by. He said the hardest part was controlling his shivering so he didn’t give himself away.

My wife’s uncle was in the 28th ID and got over run at the Bulge. A Belgian family hid him in their barn and fed him. Over the years he and they remained friends and they traveled back and forth to visit.
