The Cologne Cathedral stands amidst the ruins of the city after Allied bombings (1944). The cathedral suffered fourteen direct hits by aerial bombs during the war but did not collapse. [1290 x 996]
Bomber groups did try and spare the cathedral, both because of its cultural value but also because it was a good navigation point. When you take a look at it up close, you can see the damaged bits, as you can in so many German landmarks that have been restored, but it’s such an impressive place. Cologne isn’t the prettiest city anymore, but the way the Cathedral glows a pale yellow at night and how reflects along the Rhein along with some of the other nearby medieval church towers, it’s stunningly beautiful.
