« Sergeant William Harvey Carney of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, an all-Black Union army regiment, prevented the regimental flag from falling into Confederate hands at the Battle of Fort Wagner in July 1863. Carney received the Medal of Honor for his bravery. [482 x 719]
