I was taught very little modern middle eastern history in school and I didn’t even know what I didn’t know until I started reading Khaled Hosseini’s books as an adult. I feel like a lot of people (my younger self included) have this idea that the Middle East has always been the way we see much of it now but the fact of the matter is that even in living memory, countries such as Afghanistan and others looked very very different and often were more progressive in the 20th century than they are now in the 21st. I wish I’d been taught this in history and social science classes growing up.
