I am pretty sure you got the date wrong. It seems that this photo was taken in the aftermath of Black January, which happened in 1990.
Just saying "mass demonstrations against Soviet Union" is really vague. In this case, the demonstrations were in protest of the murder of 150 Azerbaijani civilians at the hands of Gorbachev.
