Anyone know what the medal/badge seen on a couple of breast pockets?
yokelwombat
My grandfather got dragged to an SS ‘casting’ by his buddies when he was 16 and was drafted into the LSAH.
His father died a week later, so his mother and sister wrote to Berlin and claimed they needed a man around the house for all the work they couldn’t accomplish, which was total bullshit of course.
Berlin acquiesced and he ultimately became a radio operator. All his friends ended up being killed during the war and he was shunned by their families for what they saw as cowardice after he returned.
I found a *ton* of tapes my dad recorded with him a few weeks ago and have already started transcribing them.
Spoiler: It was a pretty crazy time to be alive.

“Nazis. I hate these guys.”
LSSAH wasn’t division sized in 1940, only a motorized infantry regiment. It was upgraded to a motorized division in early 1942, then *PanzerGrenadier* division later that year.
