42 years ago, April 4, 1968, Washington D.C. burned the same night Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. 13 people were killed, 1,098 others injured, 6,100+ arrested, and $25 million in property damage were caused. [1024 x 708]
An anecdotal memory: Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on my 8th birthday. I had my birthday on the weekend after and my black friend (of the only black family at that time in my suburb) Lamont didn’t show up. Later that evening, his mother, with my present in hand, stopped by and apologized to my mother for him not attending. She said that she felt it best that her children should be home watching Martin Luther King Jr.’s funeral instead, my mother totally agreed. And when my mother told me, I understood too.
