I’m a South African and in my opinion he was the best president our country ever had. Not only did he free us from British colonialism, but also:
Under him we had fantastic economic growth, like the unprecedented 7.8% in 1965. Today our GDP is growing at less than 1% and we have 83 000 fewer companies than a decade ago.
Under Verwoerd 1 Rand was almost worth 1 Dollar… as I’m writing, $1 is worth about R15. And don’t even get me started about our inflation at present.
We enjoyed record low unemployment, unlike the 30% unemployment today.
We were scientific leaders, for example, we did the first human heart transplant in the world. Today we have the 3rd worst education system in the world, being outperformed by Namibia and Botswana.
His investments in infrastructure helped South Africa to have more roads and railroads, than the rest of Africa combined in 1965. And under him we had electricity, compare that to the ANC who turns off the electricity every second day for "load shedding".
Under him we had low crime, under the ANC 500 000 people were murdered since 1994. We did not have a woman raped every 4 minutes in 1965. And let’s not talk about the unbridled corruption that has destroyed SA in the past 26 years, but you can google "South Africa corruption scandals" to get an inkling.
Lastly, imo his idea of splitting South Africa into numerous states, as a solution for our myriad of problems, is still the best. The disaster that has been the last 25 years clearly demonstrates that.
