But I live in Strasbourg and I thought the liberation was on the 22 November… There’s a street named after it.

Man, what I would do to feel how both these liberated people and this GI felt.
I cannot imagine what it would feel like to live in an occupied country and finally see through the darkness and have that immense release in feeling saved.
Also, I cannot imagine what it would feel like to be fighting in an insanely intense war and the. Walk into a village and be welcomed by hundreds and thousands of strangers as a hero who are all celebrating your arrival.
What an intense moment.

Are you sure this is an American soldier? Because Strasbourg was liberated by the 2e DB of the French Army while the rest of the Allied Forces were pushing the germans through Belgium. So it could be a French soldier.
PS: Very cool picture!

That’s a propaganda shot, journalists back then didn’t have the freedom journalists enjoy today. Same can be said for the German army too, all those mega cool videos of German tanks going onwards with the dust rising behind them? All propaganda videos

When I was in the Army we used to go to Strasbourg all the time. It’s a cool city, plus they have some awesome wine and food.
