Xiamen Airlines flight 8301 was en route from Xiamen to Guangzhou when it was hijacked by a man seeking asylum in Taiwan. The captain attempted to land in Guangzhou anyway, and a struggle ensued during touchdown. The Boeing 737 veered off the runway, clipped a China Southwest Airlines Boeing 707, and crashed headlong into China Southern flight 2812, a Boeing 757 that had just finished boarding all passengers for a flight to Shanghai. Flight 8301 flipped upside down and exploded, killing 82 of the 102 people on board. 46 of the 122 people on the China Southern flight also died after the plane was sliced in half and caught fire. The captain of the China Southwest plane, who was the only person on board at the time, was injured but survived. The above photo was captured at the exact moment that flight 8301 collided with flight 2812 on the parking apron.
