We were still using gas lamps in major cities in 1955? Why? Electricity was common, were electric bulbs not powerful enough?

Are you gas lighting me??

This can’t be 1955. Gas street lights? Horse and carriage? In downtown Glasgow, the industrial center of Scotland?

Back in the day, a lamplighter was a very respectable position, thanks to them citizens were able to venture out at night, and business such as pubs, opium dens and brothels saw uptick in customers. Because of this lamplighters used to get preferential treatment at these establishments. However sadly this occupations is the perfect example of the destruction wrought by capitalism and automation. Lamplighters experienced mass unemployment after the introduction of electric street lamps, and I base this on no evidence whatsoever and am just talking shit.

Any idea what street? 👀

According to this article, the last gas streetlight went out in 1971.

"Underneath the gas lamp." "Where the air’s cold and damp".
1888, not 1955.

It’s weird how the UK and Ireland sort of stayed in the 20s for a few decades, then all of a sudden, bam, Beatles.

Growing up on the 50s I was a lamplighter, good times. People would always like to watch me do my work, I enjoyed it and I ate my fair share of weiners too!

Lin Manuel?

Interesting. Does he have a key or something to turn the gas on? What happens come morning, does someone snuff it with the same valve? Were the gas utilities basically similar to what we have today?
Ghost_Sights
Did any incidents ever occur from gas lit street lamps?
Bolivie
By the time he finished turning on the lights, it was already daylight

There is a single working gas lamp remaining in my home town in the lake district. The residents of the street all chip in and pay the bill for it.
It looks cozy af on frosty or snowy nights.

I love technology and realize it’s made the world a better place but sometimes I wish the world was still like this and jobs like that still existed.
