I swear I was about to scroll past this thinking it was some sort of pysch-horror art or some witchy thing…and then I read the title. This is horrifying.

If they weren’t suffering from mental illness before, they might after being locked up in a place like this.

This is so fucking tragic. What they used to do back in the days to patients of all kind. Sometimes people didn’t even have any mental illnesses and still got put in for some backwards ideas of what is and isn’t normal. The horror’s they would do to these poor souls.
Vlade-B
Btw, is there more info about this picture?

So sad. As someone who has dealt with mental
Illness I am so grateful for how far we have come.
May we get to a point where all humans can get to quality compassionate mental healthcare. We’d all be better for it.

I don’t doubt the reality of that.
For some positive to counteract that negative, check out Dorothea Dix, who campaigned for humane treatment of the mentally ill.

We have learned so much from this. Now, we just let them do drugs and set up tents on the street. That’s what progress looks like

Asylums in the past really weren’t about treatment, they were about containment.
‘Treatment’ was done in church or very rarely by some experimental doctors, it took a long time before those saw results though.
These were the ‘lost causes’ that God did not allow to be murdered, but could also not be left to wander the streets. Being kind to them was seen as more or less unneccesary, they had supposedly lost all semblance of a mind anyway. So tie em up, feed them, hose them down so they don’t get sick and just leave them in a dark hole so society can move on.
