I know this is unrelated, but the level of white poverty in Appalachia/the mid-Atlantic that is on display in this picture was atrocious in the 60s and is still pretty bad in some areas.
One of the (many) reasons why the opioid crisis is hitting that part of the country so hard.
It’s one of those forks in history that makes you wonder how things might’ve turned out had RFK won and Nixon’s presidency never happened.

I live in a town on the Northeast Corridor line of NJ Transit, and the Amtrak tracks are on the same line. The funeral train went right through our town, and quite a few people have photos and home movies of the day. There’s a historian from Europe who collects info from this time, and he’s been active on our town’s FB pages, looking for people with info.

I like to post this anytime RFK is mentioned. In my mind this is the best speech ever delivered.

Was Robert Kennedy in military? I guess I could google that…

The picture is part of [a series](https://www.magnumphotos.com/newsroom/politics/paul-fusco-rfk-funeral-train/) of photographs shot by Paul Fusco from RFK’s funeral train while it drove from NYC to Washington DC, where he would be buried in Arlington. There is also some [video](https://youtu.be/OG4vJxi9Kis?t=18) from the train.
The pictures are quite a remarkable witness to a nation in mourning.

I saw this photo this spring as part of the SFMOMA exhibit [The Train](https://www.sfmoma.org/exhibition/train/). It was very moving.

Truly a different America.

This is quite profound.
I shudder at the thought of what those salutes would (_most likely_) look like today.

“How can you tell he’s a king?”
“He’s not covered in shit.”

Robert … John F. … They were taken from us. We were taken from them. That’s what happened. Why deny that?
