Before the war, the village of Dedilovo had over a thousand houses. Only 23 remained, the rest were burned down by the retreating Wehrmacht.
All in all, more than seventy thousand villages and approximately seventeen hundred towns and cities were destroyed in the Soviet Union during the war.

Damn that void in his heart is so evident, I can only imagine he wished then that he died either with his fellow soldiers or home with his family. War and its outcomes are NEVER pretty. :/

Unfortunately, this will only get a fraction the amount of upvotes the image of that German Soldier got, because Reddit loves to jerk off about how great the Germans were.

I highly recommend the movie Come and See. It’s a soviet film, with subtitles. It gives a glimpse into the despair the man in the thumbnail is feeling.

Reminds me of "Fate of a Man" short story by Mikhail Sholohov. Highly suggest it to anyone who hasn’t read it. Very powerful and emotional.
