I work as a photo restoration specialist and I’ve actually worked with this image before. This photo was taken by someone from the famed Mathew Brady photography studio of the 19th century. There were several images taken milliseconds apart at slightly different angles. These slightly different photos can be combined to create an animation which gives a 3D effect, called a "matrice". In this case, three photos were combined to create a "triscopic matrice."
