The people in the path were fucked. I was in middle school in ’88 and was at that show. I was in a tent when the collision actually occurred. I heard an explosion and then saw the fireballs on the runway. I didn’t really grasp what was going on but I knew it was something bad. 70 people died that day and hundreds wounded. It was so chaotic, people were just being bused to any nearby hospital, whoever could take them, whether you were German, American, civilian or military. We watched bus after bus after bus full of wounded going down the main street of my town which was where the Army hospital was located. For weeks we watched videos of the accident and the chaos on the ground from so many different perspectives. Rumor was the Air Force were storing bodies and body parts in one of the hangers trying to identify them for days. I asked my dad about it later and he said we were not that far from a number of dead bodies as we were being rushed off of the flight line. My mom told us that the refrigeration trucks took the brunt of the shrapnel headed towards us which was the only reason we weren’t touched. This was the last airshow Ramstein held for quite some time because of this incident. Wiki: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramstein_air_show_disaster

I had been at an air show near Los Angeles that same day but had left early. When I got home, the TV news had a short “teaser” about a disastrous crash at an air show, and I was concerned that it was the one I had just left.
