American deserters being publicly humiliated in Florient, France on November 5, 1918. During WWI, 2,657 U.S. servicemen were convicted of desertion, with 24 being sentenced to death; all of the condemned were instead commuted to prison terms by President Woodrow Wilson. [800 x 749]
Imagine how fucked up that is. Either you’re forced to fught such a horrible war, or you go to prison.
And that was in the US. Certainly not all sides had a president that transformed their punishment.
Such a fucked up thing.

Deserters is a funny way to say slaves. Draft is slavery.

Every single European nation used to shoot deserters. France shot so much deserters that at one point their entire army was on the brink of mutiny.

Reminds me of the great Chris Rock: “you can call me a pussy. I’ll be a pussy with two legs!”

General we can not win this war. Why? Because we are out of ammo. Why are we out of ammo? We used it all killing deserters. Well let’s make more ammo then. We can not. Why? We killed all the people. General well this did not go as planned.
Seems to be a bit of not serving your self interest.

A lot of British soldiers with shell shock were shot as cowards in WWI. What a brutal time.

One of my great-grandmothers was from Lorient, France. She was a WWI war bride (great grandfather was US Navy).

What was it that decided death or not tho? For 24 to be executed out of 2.6k there must have been certain circumstances around their desertion that were different.

My grandfather lied about his age to join up in the WW1 , at the end of WW2 he was stationed back in Wales as a MP because of his age.He was sent with another MP to bring back someone who hadn’t returned from there wedding .
My grandfather and the person he was with stayed and got drunk for two days , so they had to send more MP,s to get all three of them . He got demoted from Sargent to Private for his bender. Always was a pisshead .

If anyone wants to see more about executing deserting soldiers in World War 1 ( I know kinda morbid but definitely fascinating ). Check out “Our World War” on Prime video the second episode goes into depth about the reason every country had to resort to horrific tactics of killing deserters.

Were tired of war, wanted some of la french püssy. Makes sense.

I actually feel for these guys to a point. You’re being thrown into a pointless, terrifying war for little to no moral reason. The end of the war is in sight (less than a month before it ended) and yet you’re more than likely still being sent to your death. All logic tells you to just turn and run.

I don’t blame them, The world wars were more like the European wars, American soldiers didn’t want anything to do with that
