An American officer and a French freedom fighter with a Sten sub-machinegun crouched behind a car during a street fight in a French city, June 1944. [960×953]
Nothing says "posed photo op" like the soldier casually strolling in the background.
Cool photo still.

I’m a little surprised by the rank insignia painted on the front of the American helmet. I thought that rank insignia was either omitted entirely from helmets or only painted on the back to reduce officer losses to snipers and marksmen. Obviously, I was wrong so this goes in the “learn something new every day” file.

Just because you’re fighting for your country against genocidal fascists who want to rule the world and kill everyone who isn’t German doesn’t mean you can’t look fucking great doing it – That Freedom Fighter, probably.

Those French Resistance fighters saved my father’s life on D-Day. He was one of the many paratroopers who were accidentally dropped behind enemy lines on D-Day. He landed in a tree some 4o feet above the ground, cut himself loose, fell, broke his leg and was MIA for 6 weeks or more. The resistance found him, cared for him, fed him, and in some way, the details in the letters describing the time were mostly redacted, he was returned to England. He recovered, chose to stay and fight, in September jumped into Holland where he fought until he was killed on January 5 1945 at The Bulge.
