After the heavy August 1943 bombing raids destroyed or damaged much of the city, 1,700 soldiers were employed in clearing the rubble, along with some 5,000 workers. For some days after the raids, until residents started to pour back into Milan, they were (almost) the only people in the otherwise deserted city.
