An officer of the North West Mounted Police standing beside ‘Swift Runner’ on his execution day. He was a Plains Cree trapper who was convicted in the murder and cannibalism of his wife and five children. Fort Saskatchewan, Canada, 20 December 1879. [480 x 626]
Swift Runner had taken his family trapping in the winter of 78/79, some sources claim his MIL and brother also accompanied them to their cabin. When the snow thawed, Swift Runner returned to his community alone and in extremely good shape. One of his relatives became suspicious and reported the incident to the NWMP who questioned him and were not satisfied with his account. Swift Runner lead the officers back to the cabin they stayed in, where the mutilated corpses and scattered bones of his family awaited. Upon arrival Swift Runner immediately had a meltdown pinning the murders on "wendigo spirits" who overtook him. He was arrested and put on trial shortly after, the trapper made no attempt at hiding his guilt. He was hung on December 20, 1879. Making him the first criminal hung by the NWMP in Alberta.
Since then he has become semi popular in the supernatural community, credited as being one of history’s few documented "wendigos". Although the real story is a bit more boring, some say he may have gained an appetite for human flesh, being forced into cannibalizing a dead frontiersmen the winter prior for survival. The alcohol exchanged between the Hudson’s bay company and trappers which he likely consumed was also of very dubious quality.
Oddly.. the timid posture of the officer stands out to me the most in the photo

Cannibalism was practiced some New Guinea tribes for various reasons and one can find video interviews where the practitioners report how delicious human meat is. They say it is very similar to pork.
