An old woman stands in the burnt ruins of her house after a reprisal raid by the “Black and Tans”. Granard, County Longford, Ireland. November 1920. [620×938]
Left with a pot, a kettle and a kitten. Civilian reprisals are such an impotent and misguided strategy. No surer way to burn through popular support than rendering old ladies homeless.

I was in the north of the Republic years ago and ordered a "black and tan" (half guiness half smithwicks). The barman angrily answered "we don’t have that here" (snickering from the patrons).
I pointed the pumps and asked "how do you call half that and half that?"
"Half and half" (guffaws)
When the people realised I was a clueless French Canadian, I was treated to a long drink-ladden Irish history course, and the evening was a great experience.
