I’ve been posting a few of my great grandparents photos over the last few days. This is another one of my favourites which was found in an old wooden hatbox which belonged to them.
Photo shows Selby, North Yorkshire United Kingdom. A town which is still only around 10 miles away from me today.
I really do wonder how many of those faces returned when it was over?

Terrifying to think how many of those men never returned.

This would be a great picture to do one of those overlay images with now and then photos.

I can’t imagine lettering the side of that building was extraordinarily safe for the painter at the time.

Horrible times. But this is a great photo.

They Shall Not Grow Old really showed the devastation these men faced. Many left thinking it was going to be a great expedition and fun. They returned as completely broken men, and some didn’t return at all.

These photos are incredible! What a find!

Welcome to the slaughterhouse, boys. One of the stupidest wars ever, fought mainly due to the personal pride of a few royals and costing the lives of millions for no purpose whatsoever. A bloodbath that changed history for absolutely no good reason and which proved to be only chapter one of a two-part world disaster. I don’t suppose you could have known this at the time, but had you, maybe you could have stepped out of line and simply refused to go. What a great and sad photo this is. Lambs to the slaughter and proud of it.
"Sorry, this is really, really stupid, and I refuse to be part of it. I’ll just go home now, thank you very much."
