Antiwar demonstrators protest outside the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Shirtless protester Frank C. Plada later died while serving the U.S. Army in Vietnam. Photo by Perry Riddle. [848×1024]
The trial of the chicago 7 is an awesome movie about these protests

I heard conflicting stories regarding the fate of Frank Plada. Anybody who has a decent place I can read about him that is not just the above sentence?

And the sad thing is, if he had made it home a lot of those same people next to him would have been cursing him out. Not saying it was wrong to protest the war, just a real shame that the soldiers were caught in the middle of political sides fighting.

Topical indeed. My dad was just telling me that, even with all that was going on then, he feels right now is a more uncertain time.

That’s very interesting. Sometimes I feel people speak like the anti-war protestors came from a place of privilege, you know ‘while their fellow country men were fighting they were getting high and preaching free love’. But here we are confronted with the fact that those people could be drafted into a war and die, they were protesting because they were in danger.

Great pic and story. I remember those days. There was 3 to 4 years of serious unrest in the country. Trying times for sure.

He did not die in Vietnam, though, I suppose, you could call the war a contributor to his death. He died on January 1, 1976 in Chicago. His cause of death was respiratory failure and he died in his sleep. He came back from his service addicted to drugs and suffering from PTSD and he was trying to get clean when he died.

It’s ironic. He could save others from war, but not himself

I’ll never understand how there wasn’t a revolution during the Vietnam war. Well besides the privilege of the hippie movement of course. If you’re going to get sent half way around the world to die anyway, pick up a gun, join up with the civil rights movement and all the revolutionary parties of the time and take down this shitty country.
And people are worried about what’s going to happen this week just because of another stupid election between the same two stupid parties that have always contested. Fuckin boomers.

Now democrats protest if you don’t want to send our boys to die in Syria on behalf of a group of people who they first heard of yesterday.

The claim that Mr. Plada died in Vietnam is false.

Yeah some of these pukes threw dog shit and spat on our soldiers when they came home, they even called them baby killers. Democrats are doing the same thing to Law Enforcement today

Only one president in my lifetime hasn’t started any new wars, and it happens to be the one you all hate most. Remember that all these people were protesting a candidate from your favorite party who refused to commit to ending the war that a president from said party started. A war which was massively escalated by his successor after he was assassinated. It took a guy from the party you all hate to actually end it, a guy who has been vilified ever since. Sure you can argue over details, but nothing I’ve said is false. Fewer Americans being killed to line the pockets of old men is a good thing no matter who actually makes it happen.

I remember this photograph on the cover of Life magazine back in the day. Very turbulent times.

I’m pretty sure this guy did not feel like he was ”serving” anyone other than an empire during this genocidal war.

We in the US might need some of that energy later this week.
