An interesting part of prohibition is that it wasn’t just the USA that did it. Sweden and Iceland also introduced prohibition laws. In Iceland, Beer was not fully legalised against until the 1980s
>According to one study, "Opposition to beer in Iceland was found to be strongest among Alþingi members from rural areas and traditional socialist parties. The most influential argument against beer alone was that adolescents are particularly susceptible to the temptation to drink beer. Opponents of the beer ban in Alþingi pointed out the peculiar nature of the law allowing hard liquor but prohibiting the weaker beverage. More liberal alcohol policies have increased the total amount of alcohol consumed in Iceland in recent years."[1]
This isn’t just a celebration of alcohol, this is a celebration of peace. America had waged a decade long war against its own people that resulted in tens of thousands of deliberate killings on all sides, and this was how it ended for good.
The lesson of prohibition is a warning against all strongarm political radicalism. The will to force your beliefs on others at gunpoint and under a jackboot will always run strong in the human species, and we can never cease being vigilant in pursuit of our freedoms.
Someday, God willing, we’ll be able to celebrate the end of the drug war with similar relief.

Edit: It wasn’t actually introduced in Sweden apparently, but the referendum for it was a close one, marked by a sharp gender divide between Men and Women (women were much more pro-prohibition, men were anti) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1922_Swedish_prohibition_referendum#:~:text=A%20non%2Dbinding%20referendum%20on,59%25%20of%20men%20voting%20against.
