A few years ago my wife and I went to Berlin. She lived in Germany for a time as a teenager – her dad was in the US Army – and visited East Berlin, going through Checkpoint Charlie.
Going there now, it is extremely clear which side won the Cold War. Capitalism abounds, with a McDonalds, Starbucks, and a couple other similar shops within a hundred yards of the former checkpoint. Wife said it was very strange going after all the changes.
