I doubt this is a photo of the actual 1914 Christmas truce. No barbed wire, tents in the background, not enough mud or blood and it looks like only one type of uniform.
But the real event was unparalleled in the history of war. On Christmas Eve, the two sides put down their weapons to meet in the middle of No Man’s Land and exchange cigarettes and chocolates, sing carols and play soccer. If you have ever taken even a glance at the battlefield conditions of WW 1, this scenario is both beautiful and absurd.
I have heard that the Generals on both sides of the conflict issued orders to assure that it never happened again.
