The Black Panther Party, firm supporters of the right to open carry weapons as part of their fight against racist police practices, appeared in dramatic fashion at California’s State Capital in Sacramento to lobby politicians against pending legislation that they saw as racially targeted against them. Though this legal demonstration did stir up a lot of attention for the party, the effect ran against the Black Panthers: the ‘invasion’ of the capitol by some twenty-plus organised and heavily armed men scared politicians into signing the Mulford Act, a gun control measure that, surprisingly by modern standards, had the support of the NRA.
Black folks open carrying was literally all it took for Reagan to openly be opposed to it lol
>Governor Ronald Reagan, who was coincidentally present on the capitol lawn when the protesters arrived, later commented that he saw “no reason why on the street today a citizen should be carrying loaded weapons” and that guns were a “ridiculous way to solve problems that have to be solved among people of good will.”
