The narrative was quite racist. D.W.Griffith, the greatest director of his era & one of the founders of United Artists, was completely clueless about just how racist it was. Par for the course at the time. The movie was technically remarkable for its time, but pretty unwatchable now.

Much easier to make movies that controversial in those days … and not to care about horses getting maimed & killed in the battle-scenes … as I suspect many of those were.
