It is just crazy to me that such animosity existed between two peoples solely due to such an unimportant physical attribute.

Am I the only one that would have been shitting my pants while trying to pretend there wasn’t a herd of white males waiting to beat me?

Where is this? I’m in Arlington and would love to visit the site.

That must have been terrifying for him, yet he did it anyway. Courage

No wonder everyone fought each other back then, everyone is tiny. If guys were walking around like that today people would wonder if they’re ok.

It blows my mind to think this was less than 60 years ago. These could be my grandparents. Such hatred for no reason.

It looks like he’s still alive. Also some of these kids are also in this photo on this page when some American Nazi party guy was harassing Dion. Must be the same day?
> “You know, like a reporter calls home, ‘Do you know your son is in jail?’ and my parents became very proud of me, but they wished it would have been somebody else’s child,” Dion says.
That really hits it home for me. Of course in hindsight everyone is proud and you cant not be because all he wanted was to be treated like a human but as a parent you wish your child would just be safe in a world that was hostile.
There were a lot of kids who did not make it out alive out of these situations.
> “Any time I pick up a historical publication, I feel as if a period or a comma in that book is my contribution,” he says.
That is all you can really hope for really. Gosh, this dude knows how to speak. Could be from a book.

I just noticed that the seats on either side of him are removed. Why do you think this is??
On a side note, that store looks lit. Milkshakes, tobacco and books all under one roof!? Dang.

I would like to think I would have sat next to him, been friendly, maybe paid for his meal But I doubt it and I would have been a coward. Which is part of the reason segregation went on so long.

Bet some of these people are still alive today. Bet some of them wouldn’t admit they did stuff like this.
Edit: Great story about the balls on this kid at the end of that article.

Hearing about sit-ins makes you think, “Yeah, those people had balls.” But, when you actually see photos of what normalized, unfettered racism looks like, it’s pretty goddamn ugly.

That guy in the background must be from the future because he’s holding a cell phone
