Crowd in Berlin celebrating start of war, they holding portraits of German Emperor Wilhelm and Austro-Hungarian Emperor Franz Joseph, August 1914 [1000×666]
When I see pictures like this I wonder how many in the picture would have survived the war.

This kind of reminds me of Americans when we decided we were going to invade Afghanistan and eventually Iraq after 9/11.

See, this is what happens without cable and internet.

They are gonna be shocked in the next 4 years.

It’s so weird reading about it, and seeing pictures of people being so excited for war. Not just in Germany, but all the other countries too. I am sure most common people did not expect it to turn into what it did, but still, so strange to see thousands cheering for a war.

I was watching a youtube video about Leonardo Da Vinci. He always wanted to design weapons of war, but was forced to make art to make ends meet. Until he experienced an actual war. After that he was more than content with being a painter.

Honestly, though, for sure thought they were going to win. Their army at the time was possibly the best in the world and they never thought the war would be as horrific as it was. They say war never changes but it absolutely did with the first world war.

Crowd: “Yeahhh! We’ll kick those French asses and be home in time for Christmas!”
Narrator: “They weren’t.”

It’s crazy to think a number of these young men waving their hats will die in the cause they are so excited for.

correction: Crowd *of men* in Berlin celebrating start of war.

I wonder how many of the men in this picture died in the first year of the war that they are celebrating? How many made it to the end? I bet most in this picture died in the war.
