De Loys’s ape, given the proposed scientific name Ameranthropoides loysi, was an alleged large primate reported by Swiss geological explorer François De Loys in South America . The only evidence for the animal besides De Loys’ testimony is one photograph. 1920 [697×403]
It’s a dead White-bellied Spider Monkey (Ateles belzebuth) with the tail cut off. You can see the distinct coloured patch of hair on it’s forehead and the white belly for a start. There was a guy called Dr. Enrique Tejera who was travelling with De Loys, even he said it was a dead Spider Monkey.
