[20 July plot](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/20_July_plot):
>On 20 July 1944, [Claus von Stauffenberg](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claus_von_Stauffenberg) and other conspirators attempted to assassinate [Adolf Hitler](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adolf_Hitler), [Führer](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F%C3%BChrer) of [Nazi Germany](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nazi_Germany), inside his [Wolf’s Lair](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolf%27s_Lair) field headquarters near [Rastenburg](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K%C4%99trzyn), [East Prussia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Prussia). The name [Operation Valkyrie](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Valkyrie)—originally referring to part of the conspiracy—has become associated with the entire event.
>The apparent aim of the assassination attempt was to wrest political control of Germany and its armed forces from the [Nazi Party](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nazi_Party) (including the [SS](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS)) and to make peace with the Western [Allies](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allies_of_World_War_II) as soon as possible. The details of the conspirators’ peace initiatives remain unknown,[](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/20_July_plot#cite_note-1)[](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/20_July_plot#cite_note-2)[](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/20_July_plot#cite_note-3) but they would have included unrealistic demands for the confirmation of Germany’s extensive annexations of European territory.[](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/20_July_plot#cite_note-4)[](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/20_July_plot#cite_note-FOOTNOTEHoffmann1996608%E2%80%93609-5)
>The plot was the culmination of efforts by several groups in the [German resistance](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_resistance) to overthrow the Nazi German government. The failure of the assassination attempt and the intended military [*coup d’état*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coup_d%27%C3%A9tat) that was to follow led the [Gestapo](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gestapo) to arrest more than 7,000 people, of whom they executed 4,980.[](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/20_July_plot#cite_note-shirer1393-6)
It sucks that this wasn’t successful because it would’ve spared the lives of literally millions of people.
