My parents’ best friend was Canadian. When she was a little kid during WWII, her 15 year old brother who was big for his age secretly enlisted in the Canadian Army. He shipped out before their parents knew.
His mother was frantic, and the Canadian Military scrambled to find him and send him home. They finally caught up to his unit in the Netherlands, only to learn he’d just been killed in a battle for one of the bridges.
So now when I see a photo like this, I remember her telling me the story, and I think of him.

Operation Market Garden. Band of Brothers mini-series does a good job of recreating this scene.
