Crazy time when the military (some of those MPs) fought in WW2 and 2 months shy of their 2-year anniversary of having surrendered, the leader of Japan walks a few feet away from getting stabbed by a bayonet.

But why would a god need protection from mere mortals …?

Crazy how that worked out. What if Hitler had been captured? How would he have treated?

Hirohito should’ve been shot, considering that he’s basically a war criminal.

It’s bonkers that this guy stayed on as Emperor until 1989.

I’ve always found it strange that Hirohito stayed on as emperor instead of hanging from the gallows. Many of his subordinates have been hung for far less than what this guy was at least partially responsible for.

MacArthur thought hanging him would break the Japanese psychologically and cause a large number of them to start a guerilla campaign against the occupying American soldiers. MacArthur may have been a bastard, and Hirohito definitely deserved the noose, but there is sound reasoning there. At the time it was the best bad option the U.S had.

I read somewhere years ago that Stalin intended that Hitler was to be in a public cage in Red Square and publicly humiliated and tormented until he died.

Was this to prevent assassination by Japanese communists? Interesting to think that there were anti-emperor factions within Japan back then.
