This picture was taken one year before an accident caused an explosion in the plant, killing 59 workers and wounding about 100. Most of them were women aged 16 to 30 as almost all men were fighting at the front. Hernest Hemingway, then a 19yo volunteering for the Red Cross, will be at the scene and later write about his experience in “A Natural History of the Dead”.
I think I would have been one of the women with no shoes. No way would I want to stand all day in those heels
