Some historical context: for Russians Brest has always been a Russian city. For them it was occupied by Poland since 1921, and they saw its recapture as retaliation.

The crazy part is that the Western Allies begged the Poles to allow Russian troops into Poland before Germany attacked but the Poles refused. So Russia went, "You don’t want our help? Fine, good luck fighting both Germany and us" and signed a non-aggression treaty with Germany.
