Illinois National Guardsmen patrolled the streets of riot-torn Chicago following the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. in Memphis three days earlier (April 7, 1968) [1920 × 1080]
Looks like the Guardsmen are having a Garand old time…

My earliest memory comes from the aftermath of this event – I was just 2 yrs 4 months old; we lived in a south-side suburb, and my dad wanted to see the results of the riots… so he put me in the back of our station wagon and drove through south Chicago. My memory is just a snapshot of lying in the back of the station wagon (he maybe told me to duck down?), with some wrecked buildings around us, and the sound of a helicopter going overhead. It may have been the sound of the helicopter – which I’d never heard before – that made such an early memory cement in place.
And yeah, my mom read him the riot act when we got back… no pun intended…
