Watch the movie "Seven Beauties." It is based on a guy who ends up in the Italian Army after being in prison. He and his buddy desert and are caught by the Germans and sent to a concentration camp. It’s an amazing movie, but not for the faint of heart.

They were the “Truppe Autotrasportate” (selfmoving) that in italian really sounds lika a shitty pun with the term “airborne”.
When sending them to Russia on foot (and back with no supplies in winter, always on foot) is not enought and you have to even mock them
