Unfortunately America’s tentacle monster development division was still a decade behind on its research.

If this time and area of history is of interest to anyone (coupled with fiction), I recommend reading Alfred Coppel’s “The Burning Mountain”, a 1983 alternate history novel. The key change in history in the novel is that the Trinity nuclear test of July 16, 1945 fails. Then the novel goes on to depict the outcome of Operation Downfall—the 1946 invasion of Japan—by American forces. [ISBN 9780441089352]. Coppel’s work utilizes actual American war plans and documents.
