[Shiwak](https://thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/john-shiwak) was one of more than 60 men from Labrador who joined the military during the First World War. He went on to become one of the best scouts and snipers on the Western Front. Like other young [Inuit](https://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/inuit), Shiwak would have learned to live and survive in the northern wilderness. In particular, “swatching,” or shooting seals when they briefly exposed their heads above the water as they came up for air, would have provided excellent training for a future army sniper.
