Jonathan the Tortoise (the giant tortoise on the left), as photographed in 1886. Jonathan is alive even today, and is presently 186-187 years old. It holds the record for the oldest living terrestrial animal in the world. (St Helena, 1886) [732×548]
Another important milestone will be achieved by Jonathan if it survives the next couple of years: the longest verified lifespan EVER of a terrestrial animal. (189 years is the present record held by another tortoise that died in 1965).

For comparison, Jonathan was older in 1886 than an average redditor is today. (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

Good to see this Jonathan is still alive 🙂

If Jonathan could talk: “Leave me alone ya damn kids. And stay off the lawn!!!”

How do we know it’s Johnathan? Did somebody write his name on his shell?

Where is Jonathan today?

I lived on St Helena in the early 90s and was fortunate to see Jonathan on numerous occasions. He is massive. The island is great and full of history.

That’s so awesome! I feel like I gotta go for the record now. Guess I should quit smoking.

I’ve been there and petted them. My mums side of the family are from St Helena. She’s retiring there next year. And I’ll be visiting her then. So gonna take the BF to see these.
