Joshua Norton, self-proclam Norton I, emperor of the United States of America and protector of Mexico in 1859 (photo taken around 1860s or 1870s) [600×710]
It’s funny, you’d expect he would use his first name as reignal name, not his last

Didn’t he live in San Francisco and they just let him wear a uniform and think he was emperor of the US?

There’s a wonderful issue of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman about this guy.

Sam O’Nella taught me everything I know about this man. The conveyor of very interesting yet totally useless information.

All hail Norton I! Long may he reign in our hearts!!!

Interesting tangent: Emperor Norton is interred in Colma, CA: a literal necropolis created when San Francisco decided to evict and relocate all of it’s cemeteries in the twenties. The dead outnumber living residents a thousand to one. Last place you want to be if zombies rise from their graves.
