Some background:
The first two charges of the Brits (from Sinai) on Gaza (that was held by the entrenched Ottoman army) failed. General Allenby decided on a different strategy: he first took Beer Sheba and then he attacked Gaza from its lesser fortified edge (on the eastern side). . The attack was successful. Most British troops that participated were Australian, New Zealanders (ANZAC) and Indian.
